The 4th of July came and went without fireworks again this year. If you have lived here long enough, you already know Highlands Ranch does not treat that as a loss. The community shifts its summer climax three weeks later, and August is where the calendar actually pays off.
The month HRCA quietly turned into the main event
Most Douglas County towns front-load summer. Parades, fireworks, done by July 5. Highlands Ranch runs the opposite play. With Stage 1 Fire Restrictions ruling out a traditional Independence Day show, the Highlands Ranch Community Association built its replacement programming around a late-August drone finale, and the ripple effect is a month with more free civic events than June and July combined.
Consider the anchor: on Saturday, August 22, the Summer Sunset Concert runs 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Civic Green Park at 9370 Ridgeline Blvd, with Ninety2K headlining as Denver's 90s and 2000s rock cover band. What follows is not a rerun of any prior summer. The concert is followed by a drone show tied to the America 250 and Colorado 150 initiative, marking the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and Colorado's 150th year of statehood. That is a once-a-generation civic milestone landing in your backyard park, and it is free.
The Sunset Concert is not a bonus show tacked onto the end of the season. It is the intentional replacement for the fireworks the neighborhood cannot have, and it is why the August calendar reads the way it does.

The Ice Cream Social is the softest opener of the month and the one most out-of-town guests get wrong when they visit. It looks like a neighborhood dessert table on paper. In practice, the event features all-you-can-eat ice cream treats to raise money for a local nonprofit, music by the Highlands Ranch Concert Band, food trucks and vehicle and safety demonstrations by the Douglas County Sheriff's Office and South Metro Fire and Rescue. Bring the kids who want to sit in a fire truck. It is one of the only nights of the year where that is on offer without a line.
Two weekends later, the Sunset Concert lands. Bring chairs, bring dinner, and know the dog rule before you show up: at Civic Green Park for the August 22 Summer Sunset Concert, dogs are not allowed in the park. That policy differs from the Thursday concert series at Highland Heritage Regional Park, and it is the single most common trip-up for residents who assume the rules travel with the series.
Closing the month, the Dueling Pianos Official Road Show comes through Max Taps on Friday, August 28. If you have not been to the taproom since it expanded its calendar, this is a reasonable excuse. It is a ticketed indoor show and a good rain plan for a weekend that could go either way at 6,000 feet.
The Backcountry rhythm nobody puts on a flyer
The event calendar above is the loud version of August. The quieter version happens south of Highlands Ranch Parkway, on the 8,200-acre open space HRCA manages as the Backcountry Wilderness Area. The Base Camp at 6005 Ron King Trail runs Nature Night Out on Friday evenings at 5:30 p.m. and outdoor movies at the Base Camp on Saturday nights. The June and July movie lineup ran through The Goonies, The Wild Robot, and The Sandlot before the schedule rolled into August. For families still deciding whether to sign the kids up for another camp week or just claim back some Friday evenings, this is the argument for the latter.
Two practical notes for anyone new to the Backcountry programming: the Base Camp is not the same as the main HRCA rec centers, and the Friday and Saturday events do not require you to hike in. You park, you walk to the field, you find a spot on the grass.
Where residents are actually eating this month
Two openings have shifted the dinner rotation in the last few months, and both are worth putting on the August list before they hit their busy fall.
Egg Harbor Cafe opened at 9579 S University Blvd earlier this year. The Highlands Ranch Egg Harbor Cafe is the brand's first Colorado location, and a second Colorado restaurant is set to open in the Denver Tech Center at Belleview Station. Being the first location in the state matters mostly because it means the concept has not yet been diluted by four other outposts. Hours run 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., no reservations. Show up early on Saturday or plan on a wait after 9 a.m.
The other addition is slower to arrive but worth watching. Graze Craze is under construction at 2670 East County Line Rd, Suite I in the Promenade Shopping Center, with the location listed as coming soon on the company's website. Founded in 2020 by U.S. Air Force veteran Kerry Sylvester, Graze Craze specializes in ready-to-serve charcuterie, and local franchisee Sara Clay will oversee the upcoming Highlands Ranch eatery. For anyone who has spent the last two summers assembling their own boards for the concert series, an actual store handling that has been overdue.
What to put on the September calendar now
The August programming does not end the season so much as feed the September one. Three dates are already worth blocking.
The Highlands Ranch Mansion hosts the Western Fest on Saturday, September 12, a ticketed evening on the Mansion grounds. The same day, the Fall Craft Fair runs at Eastridge Rec Center with free admission. If you have out-of-town family visiting that weekend, the two together make a full day without ever leaving the community.
Two weeks later, Highlands Ranch Oktoberfest runs Saturday, September 26 at Highlands Ranch Town Center. That is your last outdoor beer garden before the calendar tilts into holiday programming and the Mansion pivots to the December celebration.
A quick note on parking, dogs, and the small stuff
A few practical items that separate the residents who enjoy August from the ones who spend it circling for parking:
- Highland Heritage Regional Park sits at 9651 S. Quebec St. The park is at University and Quebec, behind the post office, with limited parking available. Bike or walk if you can.
- Civic Green Park rules differ from Heritage. Dogs stay home for the Sunset Concert.
